I had a cherished dream — to see myself as a child.
For example, at five years old. Chubby-cheeked, a little rascal, with sun-bleached straw-colored hair. I loved talking to caterpillars. I would ask them questions and patiently wait for answers. The caterpillars would curl up or crawl away. They remained silent.
I wanted to see myself at ten. Funny, angular, shy. With long thin braids down my shoulders. Dad bought a record player, and we listened to fairy tales for days on end. We put the vinyl record on the stand, pressed the special button; holding our breath, we gently lowered the membrane. And we listened, listened, listened.
I wanted to see myself as a child so much that one day I took and wrote a book about my childhood. About my family and our friends. About loved ones and close people. About the city where I was born. About the people who live there.
“Manyunya” is that bright thing I keep in my heart. That beautiful thing that I gladly shared with you.
