Fernando Aramburu wrote the novel "Homeland" after the Basque terrorist group ETA announced the end of armed struggle. At that time, according to the writer, he felt a keen need to understand what was happening to people during this tragic... period, why murders and violence garnered support or sympathy from many, while dissenters remained in fearful silence. Refusing to take on the role of a judge, Aramburu exemplifies two Basque families to essentially recount the recent history of an entire nation. It is a novel about love and hate, friendship and betrayal, faith and despair.
In recent decades, no book in Spain has been awarded as many prizes as "Homeland" by F. Aramburu. The novel was named the best book of the year, received the National Prize for Literature, the Critics' Prize, the prize from the International Journalists Club, and the Italian Struga and Lampedusa prizes. The total circulation has already exceeded one million. In 2020, a television adaptation of the novel (8 episodes) will be released, produced by HBO.
