The History of One City

«The History of One City» – a caustic, irony-filled work in which, under the guise of a «chronicle» of the fictional city of Glupov, the author mercilessly exposes the typical vices of Russian society – stupidity, tyranny, and bribery of the powerful, embezzlement, and sycophancy of officials, laziness, ignorance, and obscurantism. Unfortunately, it must be acknowledged that the hilariously funny and cruel phantasmagoria of Saltykov-Shchedrin has not lost its relevance even today.
