In the second half of the 1920s, Mikhail Bulgakov became known as a playwright, actively collaborating with theaters, and the productions of his plays caused a wide public resonance. Despite the fact that «The Days of the Turbins» was successful with the audience and even liked by Stalin, the play was banned and removed from the repertoire. The same fate befell «The Cabal of the Saints» in 1936. A year later, Bulgakov wrote «for the drawer» one of his most caustic works – «The Theatrical Novel» («Notes of a Dead Man»), in which he satirically describes the inner workings of the Moscow Art Theatre, where he managed to work as an assistant director. In September 2025, «The Cabal of the Saints» triumphantly returned to the stage of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre in a new interpretation.
