The Collector

«The Collector» — the first of John Fowles' published novels, from which his success in literature began. It is a psychological thriller that reinterprets many plots: from the myth of Hades and Persephone to «The Tempest» by Shakespeare.

Frederick, a modest and shy clerk, watches over the beautiful student Miranda. He is not just in love with her — he is obsessed. Almost as much as he is obsessed with his collection of butterflies. Miranda — a rare specimen, a coveted prize. And then fate smiles upon the collector. He wins a lot of money at the races, buys a van and a house in the wilderness with a large basement…

Fowles narrates from the perspective of the kidnapper and the victim, playing with the readers' emotions. He confronts Good and Evil, the beautiful and the insignificant, the sublime and the base. What will triumph, and what will remain in eternity?
