"People Behind the Fence. Private Space, Power, and the Redistribution of Property in Russia" by Maxim Trudolyubov is an exploration of one of the most painful Russian issues, the development of private property, which has gone through a very difficult path. Special historical circumstances in Russia - serfdom, loss of housing during collectivization, acquisition of apartments, formalizing them into ownership, and much more - have essentially postponed the resolution of this problem to this day; at least Russia is a hundred years behind many European countries.

This is an updated and expanded edition of the book released in 2015. The current version examines the case of Larisa Dolina in detail, which created a significant precedent in terms of law, as well as raises the issue of a large redistribution of property within the power structure that began after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Maxim Trudolyubov is a journalist, a research fellow at the Kennan Institute, the editor-in-chief of The Russia File, a former columnist for "Vedomosti," and the editor of the "Ideas" section in "Meduza."
