After the sudden death of her father, Merrick arrives in Sussex and quickly realizes that at home she is faced not only with mourning formalities but also with fear, insinuations, and an escalating threat. Her older sister behaves as if she has long been living under pressure, and around the estate, there is less and less certainty that the old order still works. As attacks on the borders intensify and the fog comes closer, the heroine has to deal with several dangers at once. To understand whom she can trust, she forms an uneasy alliance with the guardian Killian Brandon and begins to seek answers in places where the family would prefer to ignore.
