Mill on the Floss

Several generations of the Tallyver family owned the mill on the river Floss. But Tom and Maggie's father, a stubborn and hot-tempered man, quarrelled with the entire neighborhood, lost all his property, and got entangled in debts. Forced to grow up quickly, Tom takes it upon himself with youthful zeal to restore the family name, position, and fortune. But he cannot forgive his father's offenders, especially Mr. Wakeham, whose legal battles ruined his father. For Maggie, the feud between the two families becomes a heavy blow, as Mr. Wakeham's son, the sensitive and perceptive Philip, has long been a dear friend to her. The girl is forced to choose between her own feelings and loyalty to her family.
