A Grammatical Outline of Sanskrit

"A Grammatical Outline of Sanskrit" by A. A. Zaliznyak, which was previously published (1978, 1987, 1996, and 2005) as an appendix to the Sanskrit-Russian dictionary by V. A. Kochegura, is published separately for the first time. A number of typographical errors have been corrected. The feature of the outline is a sequential generative description of the morphophonology of Sanskrit, bridging the gap from the ancient Indian grammatical tradition to modern generative phonology. Without competing in comprehensiveness with the fundamental works of W. D. Whitney (1889) and L. Renou (1961), the outline stands alongside the remarkable brief grammar of M. Mayrhofer (1953). The book also includes an article by A. A. Zaliznyak with a classification of verbal roots (1975) and a fragment of his popular lecture on the ancient Indian language (2011).
