Darling is only ten years old, and yet she has to navigate this fragile and cruel world. In Zimbabwe, Darling and her friends steal guavas, play 'countries,' and cling to memories of what was 'before.' Before their homes were destroyed by armed police, before the school closed, before their fathers went away for dangerous work abroad.
But Darling has a chance to escape — to move to America, where her aunt lives. The heroine sets off for this new country in search of the abundance she has heard so much about, but faces all the challenges of immigration.
