The book tells about the changing role of the printed book in Western Europe in the 17th century, the contributions of many printing houses and publishers to the creation of a unique image of the printed book as a work of art and material culture. Great attention is paid to the Elzeviers, books of the Enlightenment era, and literary works that have become part of the golden fund of world culture.
Specifics of the development of book culture in the 19th century are devoted to separate chapters of the volume, which examine the most notable works of scientific and philosophical thought, as well as literary works.
