In the foreground here are several interconnected lines. Cecilia notices that the familiar order is starting to crack: anxiety within the family is increasing, and signs of old evil are becoming more noticeable. Next to her is Tengel-good, whose state also heightens the tension in the house. An important role is played by Tirilunn, endowed with the gift of foresight: it is her ability that helps to sense earlier than others that a new threat is looming over her loved ones. A separate line involves Irja, a girl from the Eikeby farm, not accidentally connected with this calamity.
