The famous Moscow journalist, writer, who entered the world of literature alongside A.P. Chekhov, the poet of the "Nekrasov lyrical style" V.A. Gilyarosvky (1853–1935) became most renowned among his contemporaries as an expert and chronicler of Moscow. Uncle Gilyai, as A.P. Chekhov affectionately nicknamed his friend, knew his hometown by heart, having traveled it thoroughly. He was known and loved by Muscovites (and not only Muscovites) of all classes; his articles were avidly read, and his opinions were listened to.
