Man and People. Selected Works

The Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset (1883–1955) belongs to the ranks of the prominent thinkers of the 20th century, whose legacy has yet to be fully appreciated. Ortega's favorite genre, the essay, allowed the author to address a wide range of issues: he wrote about everything from politics and history to literary theory and philosophy of science, predicted the consumer society and the creation of the European Union. Ortega's rational vitalism declared human existence-in-relationship-to-things as the only reality: “I am ‘I’ and my circumstances.”
This compilation includes works that outline what could be called Ortega's philosophical anthropology. In addition to major works—“Rebel Spain,” “Meditations on Technique,” “Man and People”—it also features several small essays, translated into Russian for the first time.
The book is intended for readers interested in philosophy, cultural studies, the history of European thought, and the problems of contemporary society.
