This collection includes stories and a novella by the famous Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904), written from 1890 to 1903, and significantly different from his earlier works. The year 1890 marked a sort of turning point in Chekhov's creative path as an artist: he took a trip to Sakhalin Island, and conversations with convicts greatly influenced his worldview. Reflections on the meaning of life, lost opportunities, life goals, and destiny will manifest in a new way in the stories of the characters. Each work contains the thought of the divine gift of life — and how we manage it. Chekhov invites us to look at different life episodes and assess our impressions of the characters' actions so that we, recognizing ourselves in the characters, see our vices and virtues and decide for ourselves how to live and what to do to use our gift as it should be.
