In Scotland, magic is an art: it is born through embroidery and the weaving of intricate patterns. Masters, known as spinners, use the life force of plants and weave it into their creations, turning threads into spells. However, some resort to dark magic to become twice as powerful, drawing energy from living beings. Spinner Rose skillfully masters the creation of spells with the help of needle and thread. But great power comes at a cost: the girl's magic is fading, slowly killing her. Long ago, Rose made a deal with the treacherous fairy Lachlan, tying a knot and swearing on her heart. The time has come to fulfill the contract, for refusal will cost the spinner her magic. Rose must find the gates to Elfhame, infiltrate the fairy realm, and steal a branch from the Dvirra Tree. Her path leads through the misty Scottish moors to the estate of young laird Conrad. Lachlan's spy becomes a governess in Conrad's mansion to find the portals hidden by ancient spells. But the closer Rose gets to unraveling the mystery, the stronger her attraction to the mysterious laird, who despises magic, becomes. The choice seems impossible: fulfill the deal and doom Conrad to death – or break the contract, losing her magic and her own life.
