Nanny from Moscow

Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelov (1873-1950) — a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize; nicknamed «the Orthodox writer» for a large number of texts on the spirituality of the Russian people. While in exile, «not for a moment in his inner burning does he stop thinking about Russia and suffering from its misfortunes». The novel «Nanny from Moscow», written from the perspective of an elderly Russian woman, tells of the troubled pre-revolutionary time. The main character, Darya Stepanovna, accompanies her ward, Ekaterina, during their flight from Bolshevik power to Crimea, and then through numerous moves from country to country, to India, to the USA, to Europe. Only unshakable faith gives the deeply believing woman the strength to overcome all the hardships of life in emigration and to remain on the path of virtue.
