The Nanny from Moscow

Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelev (1873-1950) — a Russian writer and publicist, two-time nominee for the Nobel Prize; nicknamed the "Orthodox writer" for a large number of texts about the spirituality of the Russian person. While in exile, "not for a moment in his spiritual burning does he cease to think about Russia and suffer from its misfortunes." The novel "The Nanny from Moscow," written from the perspective of an elderly Russian woman, tells of the anxious pre-revolutionary times. The main character, Darya Stepanovna, accompanies her ward, Ekaterina, during their escape from Bolshevik power to Crimea, and then through numerous relocations from country to country, to India, to the USA, to Europe. Only unshakable faith gives this deeply believing woman the strength to overcome all the hardships of life in exile and to remain on the path of virtue.
