Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov is one of the greatest Russian writers. He is called "the poet of the Caucasus" and one of the most important figures of Russian romanticism. In his works, he succeeded in establishing the tradition of the Russian psychological novel, which later inspired Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev and Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. His mastery of the short story was admired by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov himself. The romantic poem "Mtsyri" (1839) is rich in folklore motifs and the spirit of the Georgian people. This work is considered one of the last classical examples of Russian romantic poetry. The tragic story of a mountain boy's escape from a mountain monastery and his desire to be free. Faith, love, and the thirst for life are all interwoven in the fate of the rebellious youth, whose powerful spirit was celebrated in this work.
