John Dickson Carr: a master of the detective genre, an American writer, one of the brightest representatives of the "golden age of the detective genre." He is often placed alongside classics such as Agatha Christie, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, and Gaston Leroux.
Carr is called a specialist in locked room murders — plots where the victim is found in a locked space with no apparent signs of the intruder's entrance. This technique can be found, for example, in the novel "The Phantom Lover." The writer defined a detective story as "an exercise for human ingenuity, a trap and a double bind, a game in which the author plays against the reader from chapter to chapter."
