John Dickson Carr: a master of the detective genre, an American writer, one of the brightest representatives of the “golden age of detective fiction”. He is often placed alongside classics such as Agatha Christie, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, and Gaston Leroux.
Carr is referred to as a specialist in locked-room murders — plots where the victim is found in a locked room with no visible signs of the intruder's entry. This technique can be encountered, for example, in the novel “The Ghost of a Chance”. The writer defined detective fiction as “an exercise for human ingenuity, a trap and a double-bind, a game in which the author plays against the reader from chapter to chapter”.
