Bay of Betrayal. Expedition of Captain Golovnin

The main goal of the expedition was to map the Southern Kuril Islands. The "Diana" leaves Kronstadt in 1807, intending to return in one year, but troubles literally pursue the sailors. News of the war between England and Russia caught the sailors at Cape of Good Hope and led to a prolonged year of English captivity. The failed diplomacy of Chamberlain Ryazanov, which ended with an attempt to frighten the Japanese by sending the frigate "Juno" and the tender "Avos" to their shores, resulted in a torturous Japanese captivity for part of the crew of the sloop and Captain Golovnin himself.
At that time, Russia was engaged in war with Napoleon in Europe and could not send reinforcements to the Far East. The captured Russian sailors could only rely on the reason and bravery of their fellow sailors. And they did not fail. The senior officer after Golovnin, Peter Rikord, with the forces of just one sloop and a small crew, compelled the Japanese to return the captives.
