The Teacher

«The Teacher» — the first novel by Charlotte Brontë, published only after her death. In the love story of young teacher William Crimsworth and his student Frances, one can discern Brontë's biography: studying in Brussels and romantic feelings for a boarding school teacher.
The main character, an Englishman from a poor family, is searching for a job in Belgium. Social prejudices, poverty, and gender barriers are a reflection of a realistic view of emigrant life and women's emancipation. The novel features a restrained style, autobiographical details, and themes of hard work, loyalty, and finding a homeland through love, anticipating themes in «Jane Eyre».
Charlotte Brontë (1816—1855) — a famous English writer whose great novels have entered the history of literature and remain relevant to this day. At 20, she sent poems to the poet Robert Southey, who replied that she had talent, but literature was not a woman's business. With her brother Branwell, she composed sagas about the glass city of Verdopolis — an African utopia of colonizers. Her first novel «The Teacher», written in 1846, was rejected by nine publishers, but Charlotte did not give up, and in 1857, the novel was published.
