The Cliffs

On the cliff overlooking the ocean, a Victorian mansion has been guarding the secrets of the women who once lived in it for several centuries. Now abandoned, it becomes a refuge for young Jane, a place where she hides from her problems with her mother.
Years later, Jane returns to her native state of Maine to prepare her mother's house for sale. Officially, at least. The truth is that she has just ruined both her career as an archivist and her marriage, and now she is trying to lay low.
Jane is horrified to discover that "her" mansion is now barely recognizable: the new owners have erased centuries of history from its facade, and now it resembles a monster from the pages of glossy magazines. But despite its exterior polish, the house instills dread in its inhabitants: it seems to be home to ghosts. The new owners ask Jane to investigate the history of the former inhabitants of the house. The truth that is revealed to her - about stolen artifacts, restless souls, love that was swallowed by the sea, and the long shadow of colonialism - is even older than the state of Maine itself.
