Notes of a Cavalryman

One of the brightest representatives of the Silver Age, Nikolai Gumilev, always had a passion for adventure. At a young age, he fell passionately in love with Africa and in the early 1910s participated in two expeditions to distant Abyssinia. With the onset of World War I, the poet enlisted in the army as a volunteer. He spent four long years at the front, sustained a serious injury, and for his bravery in battle was twice nominated for the Order of St. George… The experiences he lived through during the expeditions and at the front became the basis for two autobiographical works by Gumilev. His journey to Abyssinia is described in the "African Diary," while the impartial yet ironic, lyrical, and devoid of sordid details "Notes of a Cavalryman" recounts the military campaigns of 1914 and 1915. This edition also includes selected stories by the author.
