Ten Lives of Mariam

1870 year. In Ohio, a census is being conducted. An ancient, dark-skinned old woman dozes in the yard of a small house. A bored census-taker records her answers to questions. Name: Mariam Priscilla Grace… former slave. Born: in 1758, or perhaps even earlier, place of birth… From the old woman's memory, long-forgotten memories rise: from the ancestral gates, from her own unpronounceable name, a whimsical spiral of lives of Mama Grace unfolds, filled with hard work, caring for the sick, but also with love and, most importantly, a thirst for freedom, which those who were unfortunate can only tell to their children.
