Colonel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Lev Gurov is investigating the death of Ekaterina Slepneva, a fan of the talent of the detective's wife, a famous actress. A dedicated theatergoer who never missed a performance unexpectedly did not show up for the last premiere. It was later revealed that she had committed suicide. The investigation established that the reason for the suicide was the betrayal of Slepneva's partner: near the corpse, photographs were found showing him in the arms of his rival. But the man denies everything. Gurov learns that just a few days before Slepneva's death, her first husband, from whom she was divorced, died under strange circumstances. A hunch tells the detective that there is some connection between these incidents. He decides to look into the past of this strange couple…
