The Pit

At the beginning of the story, the pit appears before the reader as a hole for the future foundation of a «earthly paradise», and in the finale, it becomes a grave of unfulfilled hopes. But while for some characters this signifies the fatality of the idea itself, for others it is only the necessity to dig the pit wider and deeper... Harsh satire, grotesque, phantasmagoria, caricatural exaggeration, and symbolism of images have made the story «The Pit» the greatest dystopia of the 20th century.
