The Pit

Andrei Platonovich Platonov (1899—1951) is one of the most original Russian writers of the early 20th century in terms of style and language.
The novella "The Pit" is a harsh satire on the period of collectivization, combining elements of philosophical parable and surrealism. A thirty-year-old worker, Voshchev, is fired from the factory due to "the growth of weakness in him and contemplation." Seeking to understand the truth and the structure of the world, he ends up in a neighboring city at the construction of the "common proletarian house," which is supposed to be the beginning of a city of "happy future."
The collection also includes the novellas "The Potudan River," "The Secret Man," the stories "Yushka," "The Unknown Flower," "In the Beautiful and Furious World," and others.
