This book, written by one of the founders of Spanish studies, Vladimir Konstantinovich Piskorsky (1867–1910), and first published in 1902 by the Joint Publishing Company "F. A. Brockhaus – I. A. Efron" in the series "History of Europe by Countries and Eras in the Middle Ages and Modern Times," represents the first Russian-language outline of the evolution of the states of the Iberian Peninsula from the late Antiquity to the early 20th century.

From it, readers will learn about the cultural-historical symbiosis of Christian and Arab populations on the Iberian Peninsula, the military-political twists and turns of the Reconquista, the complex paths of national state formation, and the revolutionary movements that contributed to the transformation of absolute monarchies of the 16th–18th centuries into constitutional monarchies of the 19th century.
