Black Shadows of the Red City

The book "Black Shadows of the Red City" is dedicated to one of the most dramatic periods in the history of St. Petersburg—Petrograd—Leningrad and in the history of Russia—the years of the revolution and the Civil War (1917–1922). The renowned St. Petersburg historian, publicist, and poet Andrzej Ikonnikov-Galicki describes how Petrograd lived in the early post-revolutionary years: how it coped with the rampant crime that engulfed the city, the political forces and leaders who inspired the world of crime, and the struggle against counter-revolutionary elements that led to the Red Terror. The author pays attention to the complex fates of the ideologists of the red and white movements, whose activities intertwined politics and crime. The book is based on extensive material: judicial and police chronicles, research, archival sources—and it is aimed at everyone interested in domestic history.
