The story of one of the first expeditions involved in the exploration of the Russian Arctic is full of vivid and dramatic pages. The schooner "Saint Anna," which set sail from St. Petersburg in July 1912, was trapped in the ice of the Kara Sea by October, rapidly carried northward by currents towards New Land. Unable to break free from the icy trap, part of the crew decided to return to the mainland. 

The journey took four months instead of the anticipated one. Of the eleven people who left the ship in April 1914, only two reached Franz Josef Land: navigator Valerian Albanov and sailor Alexander Konrad.
This publication for the first time brings together the testimonies of the surviving crew members of the "Saint Anna."
