«Gloomy River» by Vyacheslav Shishkov is a saga of three generations of the merchant family Gromov, as well as the first large-scale depiction of the life of gold miners in Siberia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The novel is based on real testimonies and the personal experience of the author himself, who worked in Siberia for twenty years as a research engineer. The everyday life and attitudes of that time are accurately depicted, along with the harsh beauty and wild nature of the Siberian taiga. The main character, Prokhor Gromov, faces a moral dilemma: he makes a decision and enters into a struggle with fate.

This captivating, adventurous, and at the same time, dramatic narrative has left no generation of readers indifferent. The novel was successfully adapted into film in 1968 and 2021.
