The Magic Mountain

«The Magic Mountain» (1924) — one of the most famous works of the outstanding German writer Thomas Mann (1875–1955), Nobel laureate in literature (1929), recognized as one of the key philosophical novels of the 20th century. The intense spiritual quests of the characters and the author's light irony, the reinterpretation of fairy tales and myths, references to masterpieces of world literature (Goethe, Tolstoy, and Dostoevsky) — all the characteristics of Mann's creative style are reflected in «The Magic Mountain». Young engineer Hans Castorp arrives in the Alps to visit his cousin, who is being treated in a sanatorium lost among mountain peaks. Hans is confident that he will not stay here long — he is eager to return «down», to his career, dreams, and a real, full, and turbulent life. However, contrary to all expectations, he remains on the «magic mountain» — in a small world of simple procedures and leisurely philosophical conversations against the backdrop of magnificent Alpine landscapes.
