Anne of Green Gables

When the red-haired Anne Shirley arrives on Prince Edward Island, she is certain that she has finally found the home she has always dreamed of. Anne is an orphan who did not have a childhood, as she had to work like an adult in both foster families and in the orphanage; no one gave her warmth, and her life until now had been a "graveyard of hopes." But her new foster parents—Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert—are confused since they had requested a boy to help them on the farm at Green Gables. The girl seems strange to them at first, constantly getting into trouble, but over time, Anne's unwavering optimism, rich imagination, and kind-heartedness win them and the residents of Avonlea over.
