Anne of Green Gables

When the red-haired Anne Shirley arrives on Prince Edward Island, she is convinced that she has finally found the home she has always dreamed of. Anne is an orphan who never had a childhood because in both foster families and in the orphanage she worked alongside adults, no one ever showed her warmth; her life until now has been a "graveyard of hopes." But her new foster parents — Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert — are confused, as they had requested a boy to help them on the farm at Green Gables. At first, the girl seems strange to them, constantly getting into trouble, but over time Anne's unbridled optimism, rich imagination, and kind-heartedness win them and the residents of Avonlea over.
