My Career is Failing

Miles Franklin (1879-1954) – a famous writer, a classic of Australian literature – published her first book at the age of twenty. The autobiographical novel "My Brilliant Career" caused a real furor in society, but alongside the success, the girl... experienced widespread condemnation. In her book, she was too frank and did not shy away from expressions, describing the life of provincial Australia. In confusion and righteous anger, Miles Franklin wrote a sequel, which, due to circumstances, was published only 45 years after the first novel.
 
The heroine of the book "My Career is Failing" – the same proud and uncompromising Sybilla Penelope Melvin – publishes a novel about her life, after which she is bombarded with all sorts of reproaches from family and neighbors, as well as numerous marriage proposals (with the ages of suitors ranging from 18 to 70 years). Furthermore, Harold Beecham himself – the main character of the book written by Sybilla – makes an appearance on the horizon! In despair, the girl escapes to Sydney to find understanding and support from the greatest literary figures of Australia. However, even in the big city, her "brilliant career" once again comes to a failure…
