«Hearts of Three» was written by Jack London in collaboration with screenwriter Charles Goddard. The work was conceived as a basis for a film series – the writer admitted that he took on this project due to a lack of fresh plots for cinema.
 
This was his fiftieth, anniversary book and an attempt to create an adventure story constructed according to the laws of cinema: with rapid scene changes, chases, treasures, a love intrigue, and exotic sets. However, the planned filming did not take place – Hollywood showed no interest, and the novel was published after London's death, in 1919-1920.
