Henry James, a classic of American literature, is intensely experiencing a creative crisis. He arrives in Paris and on a dreary March night attempts to drown himself in the Seine, but he is saved by an eccentric stranger who... introduces himself as Sherlock Holmes. He takes James on a journey across America to unravel the mysterious suicide of an old acquaintance of James, one of the founders of the aristocratic club Five Hearts. In this story, there will be knife fights and international terrorism, secret signs and unexpected insights, Beecher-Stowe and Professor Moriarty, as well as Kipling, Roosevelt, Poirot, Mark Twain and many others – a whole array of fictional characters and real celebrities.
 
But one of the main mysteries is – who is he really, Holmes, a figure with a thousand faces, a man who claims, by his own assertion, does not exist?
