The authors detail and captivatingly describe the sights, architecture, natural landscapes, as well as the history of those places: how the banks of the Volga were settled, the history and life of the local peoples, legends, what each region is famous for economically, and what significance the Volga holds for Russia. The book is also unique in that the illustrations were created by Alexei Petrovich Bogolyubov, a famous Russian painter-mariner, a full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts, and the grandson of Radishchev. Some sketches made during the work on the book formed the basis of his large paintings. You will also find in the book maps of cities compiled in the 19th century.
