The illegitimate child of a respected doctor and a maid, kidnapped by gypsies in childhood, Figaro changed many jobs and wandered around Spain before settling... in Seville. Thanks to his resourcefulness, ingenuity, and ability to extricate himself from any predicament and be in the right place at the right time, Figaro first succeeded as a barber, and then made a career as the indispensable servant of Count Almaviva. The vivid image of Figaro matched the expectations and hopes of the audience of that time so well that he quickly became a popular favorite, and his name became a household term.
