The Double

On the streets of Petersburg, where the nervous heroes of Gogol's stories roamed, characters of Fyodor Dostoevsky emerged just a few years later. They are petty officials, absorbed in their 'small' lives, behind the facade of which, however, lie serious passions. In 'The Double', the dark side of Mr. Goladykin's personality materializes, much like Stevenson's Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll, and in 'The Dream of a Funny Man', the ghosts of all the main themes of the author's future great novels emerge: nihilism, detachment, the fragile line between madness and enlightenment.
