It's frightening to live in a world where war is ongoing, from which you have recently returned and plan to go once more. Yet even in a nightmarish delusion, one can't assume that it's possible to end up in the... past, which is several centuries away from your time.
And there to find oneself again at war, where everyone fights against everyone — not for nothing is this period in Russian history called the Time of Troubles. A general slaughter, in which all opposing sides have already become crazed from the spilled blood — Poles against Russians, serfs against nobles, robbers plunder everyone who falls on the "great road," Cossacks fight for both sides, but more for themselves, and live through pillaging. The bloody whirlpool has drawn in all Russian lands. And it’s hard to discern to which tsar to swear allegiance and serve —
