Gogol subtly grasped the trend for folk themes and designed the... book as «evenings» — tales told at sunset. Following the puppet-like tale of the devil who steals the moon, there is a grim legend of a sorcerer. Folklore, satire, and mysticism create a world where the humorous coexists with the eerie.
 
The collection consists of two parts and is united by the image of the storyteller — beekeeper Rudi Panyk. These are stories in which folk traditions, mystical events, and lively scenes from village life intertwine so naturally that the boundary between fiction and reality almost disappears. The everyday lies alongside the incredible, but the human remains the main miracle among miracles.
