On the Black Mountain

«On the Black Mountain»... — an epic story of two twins living on a farm near the border between England and Wales. In their eighty years, they have barely left their confined little world limited by nearby towns and farms, yet their lives have encompassed all that is allotted to each person on this earth: love and cruelty, unrequited passion and betrayal, tender friendship and dreams of distant lands... The novel «On the Black Mountain» earned Bruce Chatwin the honorary James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and in 1988 it was adapted into a film by director Andrew Grieve.
«Vice-King of Uida» — a passionate, visionary novel, blazing with all the colors of the African continent (not without reason it has often been compared to «Heart of Darkness» by Joseph Conrad; some critics mentioned «the black magic of imagination»). Based on real events, the story follows Brazilian adventurer Fransisco Manuel da Silva, who set out for the infamous Dahomey (now Benin) to become the most powerful slave trader on the continent. However, the Black continent shows no mercy — neither to foreigners nor to its own children, and Fransisco Manuel becomes yet another victim in the sticky nets of the Slave Coast… In 1987, the novel was adapted into a film by director Werner Herzog titled «Green Cobra» (starring Klaus Kinski).
