Evenings on Karpovka

On a rainy St. Petersburg summer, young Lyubinka is bored at her aunt Natalia Dmitrievna's dacha. The only joy for Lyubinka is the evening gatherings of the dacha society. For among those present is the hero of her girlish dreams,... artillery officer Velsky. Yet it is unlikely that the aunt will agree to this marriage: her niece deserves a far more advantageous match.
 
One day, Natalia Dmitrievna's guests decide to compose a story and read it to their friends. And soon Lyubinka listens with delight to tales of proud merchants' wives, unfortunate without dowries, and brilliant aristocrats. Boredom departs, along with fear, and Lyubinka finally realizes that she is ready to do anything to be with Velsky.
