This book was written by historian and geographer Thomas Milner during the height of the Crimean War, in the days of the first defense of Sevastopol. Without the aim of providing a detailed description of battles, the author presents an overview of the entire history of Crimea: Antiquity, when the peninsula was Greek, the Middle Ages, when it was ruled by the Genoese, then the Ottoman Empire and the Tatar Khanate, and finally the events leading to the Russo-Turkish War, as a result of which the peninsula became part of the Russian Empire. Milner draws attention to the peculiarities of the geographical position and climate of this land, tells about its ancient monuments, the peoples inhabiting it, the rulers and heroes of different eras, and the endless military actions and political intrigues.
