The 1950s. Residents of a small provincial town of Ensk are preparing for the New Year celebrations.

Dorothea Kupriyanova, the chairman of the city executive committee, is waiting for her beloved firstborn to join the family at the festive table. Her... son has grown up to be an egoist, unwilling to work and dreaming of a beautiful life. This is not how Dorothea wanted to see him when she was once a factory worker and now the head of the city. But a mother's heart cannot be commanded.
 
The director of the factory, Stepan Bortashevich, has always dreamed of being proper and honest. But he is forced to lie, deceive, and maneuver. Only with his children is he his former self—a passionate Komsomol member, an incurable romantic, and an optimist.
 
This leap year will bring fateful changes in the lives of the characters. Not always happy, but always necessary. Illusions disappear, unnecessary connections are severed, tightly bound knots are cut, and life continues.
