The novel reflects a complex period of our history associated with the creation of the Murmansk railway and the formation of the fleet of the Northern Arctic Ocean, from which the heroic Northern Fleet later emerged.

The Russian cruiser «Ascol'd» began combat service in the Dardanelles operation but entered the revolution as a ship of the Northern fleet.

A large part of the novel is dedicated to the struggle against the interventionists in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, and Karelia.
