Notes of a Doctor

Vikenty Veresaev – a writer, doctor, translator. "Notes of a Doctor" became a true revelation for Russia and were translated into all European languages. The young writer, a doctor, candidly told the truth about medicine. In "Notes of a Doctor," he lifted the veil of secrecy over the side of medical activity that his colleagues considered to be a matter of professional secrets. "There will be no lies – I have learned not to spare myself," the author wrote. In 1904, as a reserve doctor, V. Veresaev was called to military service for the Russo-Japanese War. The events of the battle found in V. Veresaev a "sober, honest witness," in the words of Maxim Gorky. The cycle "From Stories about the Japanese War," like "Sevastopol Stories" by L. Tolstoy, was written in the heat of the military campaign. The works included in this collection became documents of the era, a candid chronicle, infused with the subtlety of psychological drawing, sharpness, and depth of social issues.
